Dürnstein
Experience Culture First-Hand
In medieval times Dürnstein was ruled by the Kuenrings, who owned fortresses in Aggstein and Dürnstein which were unfortunately later destroyed. As ruins they remain popular destinations.
The time of the Kuenrings is also connected with the imprisonment of the English king Richard the Lionheart in Dürnstein. When he was returning to England he was recognized in an inn in Erdberg (near Vienna), taken prisoner and transferred to Dürnstein.
Leuthold I of the Kuenrings (1260-1312) called the center of his possessions, today’s wine district Wachau, “Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus”.
